Stainless Steel Weld Neck Flanges BS4504 PN 40 Weld Neck Raised Face ASTM A182 F304/F304L/F316/F316L/F304H 3 Inch Weld Neck Flanges for Water Treatment
Background of BS4504 Flanges:
BS4504 was a British standard specification for flanges, fittings, and joints for steel pipes, valves, and fittings. It specified dimensions, tolerances, materials, testing, marking, and methods of designating openings for flanges. BS4504 covered a range of flange types, such as plate flanges (including raised face, flat face, and ring-type joint), welding neck flanges, slip-on flanges, blind flanges, and threaded flanges.
However, BS4504 is now obsolete and has been replaced by the European standard EN 1092-1 for steel flanges. EN 1092-1 incorporates many of the same specifications and dimensions as BS4504 but extends the range and aligns with European norms. Therefore, for current applications and specifications related to steel flanges, EN 1092-1 should be used instead of BS4504.
Introduction of BS4504 Weld Neck Flanges:
The BS4504 weld neck flange is indeed widely regarded as a popular and preferred flange type due to its exceptional features and benefits. It offers a superior and seamless connection through direct butt welding to pipes, making it highly reliable and suitable for high-pressure environments. The extended neck provides added strength and durability, while the weld connection ensures a secure and leak-proof joint.
The tapered neck design of the weld neck flange helps distribute stress evenly, reducing the risk of localized stress concentration and potential failure. The smooth transition from the flange's neck to the pipe's bore promotes improved flow characteristics, minimizing turbulence and pressure drop within the system.
In addition to its performance advantages, the weld neck flange's extended neck also facilitates easy inspection and maintenance activities, enhancing its practicality and accessibility.
BS4504 Weld neck flanges are easily identifiable by their long tapered hub, which serves a critical role in providing reinforcement when welded to a pipe. The welding of the flange's neck to a pipe enables the transfer of stress from the flange to the pipe, resulting in improved support and stability. These flanges are widely used in applications that involve high pressure and extreme temperatures, where the joint's reliability and strength are paramount.

Advantages of Using Stainless Steel Weld Neck Flanges in the Applications:
Stainless steel weld neck flanges offer several advantages, making them widely used in various industries and applications:
High Strength: Stainless steel weld neck flanges provide excellent mechanical strength, which ensures reliable performance in high-pressure and high-temperature applications.
Corrosion Resistance: Stainless steel inherently resists corrosion, making weld neck flanges suitable for environments where exposure to moisture, chemicals, or corrosive substances is common. Grades like 304, 316, and higher alloys offer exceptional corrosion resistance.
Longevity: Due to their resistance to corrosion and oxidation, stainless steel weld neck flanges have a longer service life compared to flanges made from carbon steel or other materials. This reduces maintenance costs and downtime associated with replacement.
Aesthetic Appeal: Stainless steel has an attractive appearance, which is beneficial in applications where visual appeal is important, such as architectural or decorative installations.
Weldability: Stainless steel weld neck flanges are readily weldable using conventional welding techniques. This allows for easy installation and maintenance without compromising the structural integrity of the flange.
Hygienic Properties: In industries such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare, stainless steel weld neck flanges are preferred because they are easy to clean and maintain sanitary conditions.
Grades of Stainless Steel Weld Neck Flanges:
Stainless steel weld neck flanges are commonly available in several grades, each suited for different applications based on their corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, and suitability for specific environments.
Stainless Steel 304/304L: This is one of the most widely used stainless steel grades. It offers good corrosion resistance in many environments, excellent weldability, and is suitable for a wide range of applications including food processing, architectural, and chemical industries.
Stainless Steel 316/316L: Known for its superior corrosion resistance compared to 304/304L, 316/316L stainless steel is often used in more corrosive environments such as marine and chemical processing applications. It also offers excellent welding characteristics.
Stainless Steel 321/321H: This grade is stabilized with titanium, which prevents carbide precipitation during welding. It is suitable for high-temperature applications (up to 900°C) and has good resistance to intergranular corrosion.
Stainless Steel 347/347H: Similar to 321/321H but with niobium stabilization instead of titanium. It offers improved intergranular corrosion resistance and is suitable for high-temperature applications.
Duplex Stainless Steels (e.g., 2205, 2507): These grades offer a combination of high strength and excellent corrosion resistance. They are used in aggressive environments where both corrosion resistance and mechanical strength are critical.
Super Duplex Stainless Steels (e.g., S32750, S32760): These grades have even higher strength and corrosion resistance compared to duplex stainless steels, making them suitable for extremely corrosive environments such as seawater applications.
Applications of BS4504 Weld Neck Flanges:
Petroleum and gas industry: BS4504 stainless steel weld neck flanges are commonly used in pipeline systems for transporting oil and gas. These pipelines typically transport liquids or gases at high pressures and temperatures, so they require good pressure resistance and sealing performance. BS4504 stainless steel weld neck flanges can meet these requirements and are suitable for various oil and gas exploration, processing, and transportation environments.
Chemical industry: In the chemical industry, BS4504 stainless steel weld neck flanges are widely used to connect pipelines in various chemical production and processing processes. These processes may involve corrosive media, high temperature, or high pressure conditions, so materials need to have good corrosion resistance and pressure resistance.
Power plants: BS4504 stainless steel weld neck flanges are used in power plants to connect key equipment such as boilers, steam pipes, and cooling water systems. These systems typically face high temperature and pressure conditions and require reliable pipeline connections to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Manufacturing industry: In the manufacturing industry, BS4504 stainless steel weld neck flanges are commonly used to connect pipelines in various industrial equipment and machinery. These devices may include chemical equipment, food processing equipment, papermaking machinery, etc.
