Description of ASME B16.5 Socket Weld Flanges:

When connecting a socket weld flange to a pipe, a fillet weld is used to join the outer surface of the pipe and the hub of the flange in a triangular cross-section weld. The pipe is initially inserted into the flange socket, and alignment is facilitated by the easy fit. Prior to welding, it is crucial to maintain a 1/16" (2.0 mm) gap between the pipe end and the bottom of the flange socket to accommodate differential thermal expansion. Failing to maintain this gap can lead to weld cracking due to the differing thermal expansion rates between the pipe and the socket welding flange as temperatures rise. Additional strength can be achieved by employing an internal weld, which is then ground smooth to minimize turbulence and flow restriction.

Socket weld flanges conforming to ASME B16.5 standards are permissible under the B31 series of Pressure Piping Codes and ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes. While they are available in sizes up to 3", they are most commonly used in sizes of 2" and smaller, making them suitable for small diameter high-pressure piping systems. However, it is important to note that socket welding is susceptible to crevice corrosion. Corrosive solutions from the process fluid may accumulate in the gaps and crevices between the pipe's outer surface and the socket surface of the flange, potentially leading to crevice corrosion. Consequently, socket welding flanges are typically avoided in corrosive applications.

Constructions for ASME B16.5 Carbon Steel Socket Weld Flanges:

The ASME B16.5 compliant socket weld flange is a specific type of flange that includes a hub. It typically comprises a circular flange body and a tapered hub. The flange must be manufactured as a single piece, and the taper angle should not exceed 7 degrees. The bore of the flange is machined with a socket structure of a specific depth. The socket's diameter should match that of a slip-on flange of the same size, while the smaller bore diameter should be equal to the nominal inside diameter of the adjoining pipe or the bore diameter of a welding neck flange of the same size. The socket weld flange can come with a raised face (RF), flat face (FF), or ring type joint (RTJ) configuration.
