Description of ASME B16.5 Carbon Steel Lap Joint Flanges:

ASME B16.5 lap joint flanges are a type of flange that conform to the standards set by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). These flanges are widely used in piping systems for various industries, including oil and gas, chemical, petrochemical, and power generation.

When installing the lap joint flange into the piping system, a lap-joint stub end is necessary for proper attachment. The stub end can be visualized as a pipe sleeve, with one end butt welded to the pipe and the other end flared at a right angle to the pipe axis. Together, the lap-joint flange and stub end create a two-piece composite lap joint connection.

Before the "pipe sleeve" is welded onto the adjacent pipe in a lapped connection, the loose-type lap joint flange is slid over the straight length of the pipe sleeve and comes into contact with the back face of the stub end or its "flared shoulder". The flange can be rotated freely to align the bolt holes properly, which are then used to secure the joint. The lap joint flange is also referred to as a lapped "backing flange", while the flared end of the stub end is known as the "lap".

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Lap Joint Flanges in the Applications:

The usage of Lap Joint Flanges offers two significant advantages in their application. Let's consider a piping connection that demands the use of an expensive corrosion-resistant alloy like nickel, zirconium, tantalum, or titanium for all "wetted" parts. In such cases, the Stub End can be fabricated from the costly alloy to resist corrosion, while the Lap Joint Flange, acting as a backing flange, can be made from more affordable carbon steels. This approach proves to be cost-effective compared to using an entirely alloy-based flange.

Furthermore, the Lap Joint Flange, not being welded to the pipe, allows for free rotation to align bolt holes, simplifying assembly and disassembly processes. This feature proves beneficial in piping systems that require frequent dismantling for inspection or routine maintenance. By separating the Lap Joint Flange and Stub End without involving the pipe, accessing the joint becomes easier, reducing downtime during maintenance operations.

In summary, Lap Joint Flanges offer a practical and cost-effective solution for piping systems that necessitate corrosion-resistant materials, while also providing ease of maintenance and inspection.

The use of Lap Joint Flanges is associated with certain disadvantages. One key issue is the formation of crevices between the internal surface of the flange bore and the external surface of the stub ends, which can easily collect contaminants and lead to crevice corrosion. This poses a significant challenge for maintaining the joint's integrity and longevity.

Moreover, the accumulation of longitudinal stresses due to pressure, weight, and thermal expansion can exceed the allowable stress limits prescribed by ASME B31.3 at the design temperature. Therefore, Lap Joint Flanges are typically recommended for mild service applications where the loads applied to the flange connection by the pipe are relatively low.

Another potential problem is the occurrence of galvanic corrosion when using Lap Joint Flanges made from different materials than the stub ends. This happens when two dissimilar metals come into contact in the presence of an electrolyte, causing accelerated corrosion.

To overcome these issues, careful consideration must be given to material selection while implementing Lap Joint Flanges in a piping system. Appropriate maintenance and inspection practices should also be employed to mitigate these concerns and ensure optimal performance of the joint.
