Description of AWWA C207 Steel Ring Flanges:

AWWA C207 is a standard in the United States of America that defines the requirements for steel pipe flanges used in waterworks service. These flanges are available in sizes ranging from 4" to 144" (100 mm to 3600 mm). AWWA stands for "American Water Works Association". The origin of AWWA C207 dates back to 1942 when a proposal was put forward to establish standards for slip-on steel-ring flanges for welding to steel water pipes. This standard was necessary because the lowest pressure ratings for steel flanges at that time were those with cold-water pressure ratings of 275 psi (1896 KPa). These ratings were far higher than those typically required for water service, which had a primary pressure rating of 150 psi / 1034 KPa.

AWWA C207 flanges are designed to connect steel pipes, fittings, valves, or other equipment in water utility services. The standard specifies two main types of flanges: (1) ring-type slip-on flanges, which are also called ring flanges or plate flanges; and (2) blind flanges. Both ring and blind flanges are steel flanges that do not have a hub.

AWWA C207 flanges are classified into four classes based on their working pressure limits: Class B (86 psi), Class D (175-150 psi), Class E (275 psi), and Class F (300 psi). These pressure limits apply to customary conditions and temperatures in water utility services.

The Origins of AWWA C207 Steel Ring Flanges:

The history of AWWA C207 dates back to the early 1940s when the American Water Works Association (AWWA) recognized the need for a comprehensive standard for steel pipe flanges used in waterworks service.

In 1942, a proposal was put forward to develop standards for slip-on steel ring flanges that could be welded to steel water pipes. The goal was to establish uniform specifications and guidelines to ensure the safe and reliable installation of flanges in water supply systems.

The initial focus of AWWA C207 was to address the pressure ratings of steel flanges. At that time, the existing pressure ratings for steel flanges were much higher than what was typically required for water service. The proposal aimed to establish appropriate pressure ratings that aligned with the specific needs of waterworks applications.

Over the years, AWWA C207 underwent several revisions and updates to incorporate advancements in materials, manufacturing techniques, and industry practices. These updates aimed to improve the performance, durability, and safety of steel flanges used in waterworks service.

Today, AWWA C207 is widely recognized and adopted as the industry standard for steel pipe flanges in water supply systems. It provides guidance on dimensions, materials, pressure ratings, gasket selection, and other important aspects to ensure the proper functioning and longevity of flange connections.

The ongoing development and refinement of AWWA C207 reflect the commitment of the AWWA and industry experts to continuously improve the standards and practices related to steel flanges in waterworks service.
